Celebrate Literacy Week

The Florida Department of Education has designated January 24–28 as Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! This week is designed to raise awareness about the importance of reading, and to inspire Florida's students and families to make reading part of their daily routines.

The 2022 Celebrate Literacy Week theme is Launch Into Literacy, Blast Off Into New Worlds! With this theme in mind, Flagler Schools will be reading books with a variety of settings to support the New Worlds Reading Initiative program released this fall.

Operation Mustang Success Activities:

Monday, January 24th

Discovery: Students choose a biography of a famous astronaut or scientist.

Tuesday, January 25th

The Beauty of Space: Read or write poems inspired by the stars, moon, planet or solar system.

Wednesday, January 26th

Explore New Worlds: Read sci-fi short stories, and sci-fi novels.

Thursday, January 27th

Challenge: Pick your favorite book, story or movie and re-write the ending.

Friday, January 28th

Launch a Love of Reading: (Students who qualify for this activity will be notified.) 7th/8th grade field trip to BTES to read to Kindergarten–2nd grade students.

The following activities will also be included:

Daily Drop Everything and Read time
Virtual Spark scavenger hunts
Daily prize drawings for checking out books
Student book recommendation videos
Principal's challenge: Read Mr. Andrew’s chosen book, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Qualified participants will be treated to a pizza party in February
Teachers dress like a vocab word on Friday
